You will be shocked to know that some people are not aware of the power of thinking which we call unreflective thinkers. They are largely unaware of the determining role that thinking is playing in their lives and of the many ways that problems in thinking are causing problems in their lives. But critical thinkers are far from unreflective thinkers.
So who are critical thinkers and how to know am I a critical thinker or not?
Critical thinking is the disciplined art of ensuring the use of the best thinking you are capable of in any set of circumstances. The general goal of thinking is to “figure out the lay of the land.” We all have multiple choices to make the right decision so we need the best information for that.
Who are the critical thinkers, basically they are very good questionnaires? They ask questions about what they have seen, heard, read. They try to find out all possibilities whether they see any problems in their way. They search deep, analyze properly and think intellectually.
What is going on in this or that situation? Are they trying to take advantage of me? Does so-and-so care about me? Am I deceiving myself when I believe that? What are the likely consequences of failing to? If I want to do it, what is the best way to prepare for it? How can I be more successful? Is this my biggest problem, or do I need to focus my attention on something else? Responding to such questions successfully is the daily work of critical thinkers. This is the basic sign of a critical thinker.
Now think, do you question or not?
